The Apuan Alps have been a favourable location for marmor excavation since the Roman Empire. Mining in those areas, being carried out until today, has caused significant changes in the ecosystem and the hydrogeological balance. The recent Regional Landscape Plan by Tuscany authorities has divided the representatives of two different issues: on the one side there is the environmental protection and conservation of these places; on the other one there are those who support the activities of the stone sector.

The photographs have been taken in Carrara, in the Torano, Fantiscritti and Colonnata basins. Driving along these roads, the panorama becomes surreal, with its muountains sectioned, excavated and unaccessible. The natural landscape, mostly lacking its original vegetation, looks like a huge costruction site.
